Why Most Productivity Advice Doesn’t Work
Have you ever noticed that most productivity and goal setting advice is written by people who seem to think we all have unlimited energy, zero responsibilities, and 14 uninterrupted hours every day?
Because I don’t know about you, but my life doesn’t look like that.
I have business goals.
I have personal goals.
I have faith goals.
I have days where I’m motivated and days where I’d rather sit on the couch with a coffee and scroll Pinterest.
The problem isn’t usually that we don’t know what to do.
The problem is that we try to do too much at once.
We set 25 goals.
Create giant to-do lists.
Download 17 productivity apps.
Then feel discouraged when we can’t keep up.
The biggest productivity breakthrough I’ve ever had was realizing this:
You do not need to do everything. You need to do the right things consistently.
The Productivity Mistake That’s Keeping You Stuck
A lot of people spend their days being busy. Very few spend their days moving forward.
There’s a difference.
Busy looks like:
- Answering emails
- Organizing files
- Rearranging your planner
- Researching for hours
- Watching another YouTube video
Productive looks like:
- Publishing the blog post
- Creating the Pinterest pins
- Launching the product
- Sending the email
- Posting the content
One creates motion.
One creates results.
Every morning ask yourself:
“If I only accomplished one thing today, what would move my life forward the most?”
Start there.
My “Rule of 3” Goal Setting Method
This is probably the most useful productivity tip I can give you.
Every month I identify:
3 Business Goals
Examples:
- Publish 4 blog posts
- Grow Pinterest traffic
- Create a digital product
3 Personal Goals
Examples:
- Read 2 books
- Walk 10,000 steps daily
- Create a morning routine
3 Faith Goals
Examples:
- Read the Bible every day
- Memorize Scripture
- Spend 10 minutes praying each morning
That’s it.
Nine goals.
Not 42.
Not 100.
Nine.
Because when everything is important, nothing is important.
The Goal Setting Formula That Actually Works
Most goals fail because they’re too vague.
Bad goal:
“I want to make more money.”
Good goal:
“I want to earn an extra $1,000 per month through affiliate marketing by December.”
Bad goal:
“I want to get healthier.”
Good goal:
“I will walk 8,000 steps five days per week.”
A goal should tell you:
- What you’re doing
- How much
- By when
If it doesn’t, it’s a hope, and most likely won’t happen.

The Weekly CEO Meeting I Have With Myself
This sounds fancy but it’s honestly it helps to think bigger.
Every Sunday I ask myself:
What worked this week?
What didn’t work?
What made money?
What wasted time?
What are my top 3 priorities this week?
This takes about 20 minutes.
But it saves me hours of confusion later.
Most people never stop to evaluate what’s actually working.
The 80/20 Rule That Changed My Business
This is one of my favorite productivity concepts.
The idea is simple:
20% of your actions create 80% of your results.
For example:
On my blog, I noticed:
- A small percentage of blog posts bring most of my traffic.
- A small percentage of affiliate links generate most commissions.
- A small percentage of Pinterest pins drive most clicks.
So instead of constantly creating more, I started doubling down on what was already working.
Ask yourself:
What 20% of your activities are creating most of your results?
Do more of that.
If you don’t have a way of making money from home yet – now is the BEST time to start. I recommend checking out this post: ‘All the ways you can make money in 2026‘
Stop Setting Daily Goals. Set Weekly Goals Instead.
Daily goals can make you feel like you’re constantly failing.
Life happens. Kids get sick. Plans change. You get tired.
Weekly goals are much more forgiving.
Instead of saying:
“I need to finish this today.”
Try:
“I need to finish this by Sunday.”
You’ll often get more done with less stress.
The Productivity System I Wish I Started Years Ago
If I was starting over today, this is exactly what I would do: (use this as inspiration to create your own)
Monday
Content Creation Day
- Write blog posts
- Create products
- Film content
Tuesday
Marketing Day
- Email marketing
- Social media
Wednesday
Growth Day
- SEO
- Networking
- Learning
Thursday
Money Day
- Affiliate marketing
- Product optimization
- Reviewing analytics
Friday
Admin Day
- Planning
- Emails
- Organizing
This simple structure removes decision fatigue.
You always know what you’re supposed to be working on.
The Real Secret to Productivity (It’s Not Motivation)
People think productive people are more motivated.
They’re not.
They just keep going when motivation disappears.
Motivation comes and goes.
Systems stay.
You don’t need to feel inspired every day.
You need habits that carry you through the days you don’t feel inspired.
Why Faith Should Be Part of Your Goal Setting Process
One thing I’ve noticed is that I accomplish far more when I stop trying to carry everything myself.
Before setting goals, I pray.
I ask:
“God, where are You leading me?”
“Which opportunities should I pursue?”
“What should I let go of?”
Because not every opportunity is a God opportunity.
Not every open door is your door.
Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is stop chasing things God never asked you to pursue.
Proverbs 16:3 says:
“Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
I love that verse because it reminds me that productivity isn’t just about effort.
It’s about direction.

The Productivity Challenge: Try This for 30 Days
Before you leave, try this:
Choose:
- 3 business goals
- 3 personal goals
- 3 faith goals
Then every week ask yourself:
“What are the 3 most important things I need to do this week?”
Not 30.
Just 3.
Do this consistently for 30 days and you’ll be shocked how much progress you make.
Because success rarely comes from doing everything.
It comes from doing the right things over and over again.
