Why Strasbourg Is the Christmas Capital of Europe

by Alison Leave a Comment

Christmas in Strasbourg

Here’s why this beautiful French city turns into one giant Christmas wonderland every December.

Growing up in Australia, Christmas looked very different to what it does here in Europe.

My Christmases were summer dresses, water fights with my cousins, jumping in the pool and eventually settling down for a quiet night watching a Christmas movie.

And I loved it.

But then I moved to Germany.

Suddenly Christmas meant freezing temperatures, coats, scarves, little wooden market stalls covered in lights and drinking something warm just so my hands wouldn’t fall off. 😂

I thought German Christmas markets were the most magical thing I’d ever seen.

Until I went to Strasbourg.

Finally I understood why people call this place the Christmas Capital of Europe.

Because Strasbourg doesn’t just have a Christmas market. The whole city becomes Christmas.

Imagine walking through narrow streets lined with beautiful half-timbered houses, looking up to see thousands of twinkling lights, turning a corner and finding a little Christmas market tucked into a historic square, then continuing towards Strasbourg Cathedral while the smell of cinnamon, gingerbread and warm food follows you through the streets.

And just when you think you’ve seen the prettiest part…it continues.

I was 22 when I went to Strasbourg for the first time, and I couldn’t believe somewhere like that existed. It felt like a literal fairytale.

And that is what makes Strasbourg so special.

Christmas in Strasbourg

There are plenty of beautiful Christmas markets across Europe. Germany has some incredible ones, Austria has Vienna, Belgium has Bruges…

But Strasbourg has something different.

It doesn’t feel like you’re visiting a Christmas market.

It feels like you’re visiting a Christmas city.

So why exactly is Strasbourg called the Christmas Capital of Europe?

I think once you see what happens to this city every December, you’ll understand.

Strasbourg Doesn’t Just Have a Christmas Market

When you visit some Christmas markets, you go to the market.

You walk around the stalls, buy some food, have a hot drink, maybe buy a Christmas decoration and then you’re done.

Strasbourg doesn’t really work like that. Christmas is woven into the city.

You can leave one market and start walking down a little street, and suddenly you’re looking at another beautifully decorated building. Then you turn another corner and there are lights hanging above you. Then you see another little stall.

And you just keep going. I kept thinking, surely this is it? And then there was more.

This is why I loved it so much.

It didn’t feel like I was visiting a Christmas market, it felt like I was visiting a Christmas city.

Strasbourg Has Been Doing Christmas for a VERY Long Time

There is also a pretty impressive history behind all of this.

Strasbourg’s Christmas market tradition dates back to 1570, when the Christkindelsmärik was established around the cathedral.

So when Strasbourg says it knows how to do Christmas…

They aren’t exactly new to this. 😂

The market has been evolving for hundreds of years, but the city has held onto so many of those traditional elements that make Christmas in Europe feel so special.

And I think that’s part of the reason it doesn’t feel manufactured. It feels like a tradition that has just grown and grown over generations.

The Christmas Markets Are All Over the City

Strasbourg is the Christmas captial of Europe

One thing I really loved about Strasbourg is that you don’t have to stand in one market for three hours trying to make the most of it.

There are different market areas spread throughout the historic centre.

You’ve got the area around the cathedral, Place Broglie, Place Kléber, Place Gutenberg and the beautiful Petite France area.

And each one feels a little different. Some are more focused on food, or have beautiful handmade decorations, and others are busier and more lively.

So instead of just going to one market, you can spend the day wandering around Strasbourg and discovering them as you go.

That’s my favourite way to do it. I don’t want to rush through Christmas.

I want to wander around, stop when something catches my eye, get a hot chocolate when I’m cold and probably buy something I absolutely do not need. 😂

And Then There Is the Christmas Tree…

Christmas Tree in Strasbourg

The Christmas tree at Place Kléber is huge.

And I don’t mean “big Christmas tree” huge.

I mean you walk towards it and think, how on earth did they get that thing here?

It has become one of the most recognisable parts of Christmas in Strasbourg, and when it’s lit up at night, it’s something you’ll never forget.

There is something about standing underneath a massive Christmas tree surrounded by lights and people that makes you feel all the feelings you felt when you were a child at Christmas.

Strasbourg Cathedral at Christmas Is Something Else

Strasbourg Cathedral at Christmas

I already think Strasbourg Cathedral is incredible.

But put it in the middle of Christmas?

Ahhh.

The cathedral sits right in the heart of the Christmas markets, so you can be wandering around looking at little wooden stalls one minute and then look up and see this enormous historic cathedral towering above everything.

It feels a little surreal, and this is one of those moments where I don’t think photos really do it justice.

You can see the lights in a photo, but you can’t feel the cold air, or smell the Christmas food.

And you definitely can’t capture that feeling of standing there thinking, wow… I’m actually here.

Petite France Looks Like It Was Made for Christmas

Petit France in Strasbourg

If you’ve never seen Strasbourg’s Petite France area before, add it to your list.

Seriously.

The half-timbered houses, little canals, bridges and narrow streets are already gorgeous without Christmas decorations. Then Strasbourg goes and covers everything in lights and festive decorations.

It is almost ridiculous how pretty it is. I kept wondering how people actually live there and just casually walk past these buildings every day.

Meanwhile I’m standing there taking approximately 700 photos of the same street. 😂

It is one of those places where you don’t really need an itinerary. Just walk, look around, and see where you end up.

The Food Is a HUGE Part of It

Christmas Market food

And obviously, we need to talk about the food.

Because what is a Christmas market without eating your way through it?

Strasbourg has a really interesting mix of French and Alsatian food, so you’ll find things that feel slightly different from the traditional German Christmas markets I’m used to.

You’ll see things like tarte flambée, gingerbread, bredele cookies, kougelhopf, crêpes and plenty of warm drinks.

And yes, I recommend trying things simply because they look good.

This is Christmas, calories don’t count 😂

So… Is Strasbourg Actually the Christmas Capital of Europe?

After visiting Strasbourg myself, I can honestly understand why it has that reputation.

Is it objectively the best Christmas market in Europe?

I don’t know if there is such a thing.

Everyone wants something different.

Maybe you love the traditional German markets. Maybe you want snow and mountains. Maybe you want a tiny fairytale village rather than a city.

But I do think Strasbourg has something really special.

It isn’t just the markets, it’s the history, the architecture, the food. the decorations, the lights, the different market areas, the cathedral, and Petite France.

As an Australian who grew up thinking of Christmas as summer dresses, swimming pools and water fights with my cousins, I still find European Christmas completely magical.

But Strasbourg?

Strasbourg really is something else.

And after seeing it for myself, I can definitely understand why they call it the Christmas Capital of Europe.

It should definitely get a place on your Bucket list. 🎄

What an experience! It was so beautiful and interesting. Filled with so much history, breathtaking architecture and weeds and nudity…

What a combination.

8 years ago I moved abroad to the US from Australi 8 years ago I moved abroad to the US from Australia.
And 2 months ago my husband, dog and I moved to Germany. 🇩🇪

So what’s next for us? ✨

-I am learning German, it’s hard so feel free to encourage me lol

-I won’t be able to work for a while so I’m LIVING IT UP (mostly with pastries)

-Aldrin has some interviews coming up for work (he is German so he can start working straight away)

-We are living with friends, in their built out attic and it has been the best way to start in a foreign country - instant community, pizza nights, bbq’s etc..

-We are loving being a part of a smaller Church, feels already like family

-In a few months we will start looking for our own place, which will make it feel real that this Country is home

-Attainable travel in Europe is a dream come true and I’ll be sharing it all!

-We feel so privileged and blessed to be living in our 3rd Country together 🇦🇺🇺🇸🇩🇪

-Big life transitions are hard (miss family and friends everyday) but thankfulness has been the key for us

-Lastly, Aldrins cousin made us a cake to welcome us here to Germany from Australia and then the US🥹 what is my life?!

THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO THE THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO THE USA 🇺🇸 FROM AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺
⬇️
-Marrying a permanent resident is NOT the same as marrying a US Citizen. It took me 2 years to be allowed back into the US. Marrying a citizen is much faster, knowing that in advance would have been helpful lol 😑

-Every state in the US is almost like a different Country, they have their own culture and laws, unlike Australia where they are much more similar

-Public transport is so different in the US (unless you live in a major City.) So many people I know there have never been on a train before 🤯

-Not having free medical insurance is just like in the movies, it’s hard to plan financially and save, I’ll forever be grateful for Australia’s medical system

-The work/life balance is probably my least favourite things about living in the US. US employees are actually not always legally entitled to paid holidays, but on average employees do provide on average around 5-10 paid vacation days a year.

-Thanksgiving is the best! We love it and want to incorporate it into our traditions 🦃

-Writing dates backwards I am used to now, but it took forever! My birthday is 28/7 but in the US it is 7/28…

-Americans are sO good at championing each other and celebrating peoples success, it’s such a beautiful part of their culture! 🙌🏼

-Squirels look just like they do in the cartoons 🐿️

-Lastly, don’t ask for a side of ‘chips’ with your burger, you will be disappointed 😆
