Isn’t there something magical about Castles? I just love them. So now that I am living in Germany, people have been asking if I have seen any Castles and if I am going to go and stay in any. It’s crazy that I am now being asked that question! My life is a dream. I looked up 6 Castles in Germany that you can actually stay in. There are many more that you can visit and tour. Nevertheless, if you can actually stay a night or two in a Castle I think it would be a dream!
I am from Australia, and we have what we call ‘Castles’ but they are nothing compared to what there are here in Europe. For example, here they are huge, old and feel like a fairytale when you see them, let alone if you get to stay in one!
There are a lot of people that will come and visit me here in Germany. It will be exciting to take them to visit some Castles and maybe even stay in some.
I researched some of the highest rated Castles that you can actually stay in here in Germany and I chose 6 that I personally have added to my Bucket List. I chose them based on what I would prefer, which includes:
- A good location (how easy it is to get there, close to a town, or something else interesting to visit)
- How much of the Castle you can experience (not just a small room)
- Ambiance and the quality of the amenities
- Food, Entertainment
If you come to Germany and want to stay in a Castle (yes you do) I hope this list helps you!

6 Castles in Germany that you can actually stay in:
1. Castle Hotel Auf Schoenburg
This Castle looks legit! And absolutely beautiful with a 4 star rating. Nestled in a mountain, this Castle overlooks the Rhine river in a town called Oberwesel.
Location:
The Castle Hotel Auf Schoenburg is located in the Middle Rhine Valley in Oberwesel. Oberwesel actually means the town of ‘wine and towers’. This small town has half-timbered and red-roofed houses, green mountains and castles, so it does feel like you’ve stepped back in time.
It is easy to get to by car. It is about halfway between the city of Bonn and Frankfurt. The closest airport is in Hahn, around 37 kilometers from Oberwesel.
There are great restaurants, vineyards, a river cruise, historic sites and beautiful architecture to explore in Oberwesel.
Castle Experience:
The Castle itself is sitting on a mountain that overlooks the town and river. It is a huge Casle and offers 30 comfortable rooms and suites. Each room is decorated individually. Ensuring that you feel like you’re actually staying in a castle!
Many rooms offer a balcony or terrace with amazing views of the town and river. Additionally, guests are provided with exclusive access to the castle gardens and museum.
Room and what’s included:
The less expensive rooms are decorated beautifully and include; a Queen bed, Terrace, WiFi, Shower, Safety Deposit box, Hair dryer, Television, Telephone, Toilet, Bathroom and Bathroom amenities.
For the more expensive rooms they include all the above plus; a King bed, a seating area, bath tub, separate toilet from the bathroom, working desk and a free minibar.
All the rooms are just exquisite.
Food/ Entertainment:
This part is exciting! Booking a room means that it includes Breakfast in the Dining area of the Castle! What a way to start your day!!
They then offer a fine dining experience in the castle’s restaurant, or the option of a Bistro. My favorite part is the Terrace where you can eat with the most spectacular view!
There are also quite a few authentic restaurants, bars and cafes in town, which is only a short walking distance.
2. East Wing in the winery and Castle F. V. Landenberg
At the Winery and Castle F. V. Landenberg, you actually hire out an entire wing of the castle! If you love historical ambience, combined with a touch of luxury and design then this is for you!
Location:
Castle F. V. Landenberg is located in Ediger-Eller in Germany. It is 1 hour from the city of Koblenz and 2 hours from Frankfurt. The closest airport is Hahn, which is 33km’s from Ediger-Eller, or Frankfurt is the next closest, which is 172km’s (2 hours by car). From Frankfurt you can also catch the DB Train, which will take you 3 hours.
The town of Ediger-Eller is a very quiet and slow town. If you love visiting wineries, this is the place for you! There are many wineries and they love visitors. You can make a weekend out of visiting wineries, churches and cathedrals and walking around the beautiful Countryside!
Castle Experience:
This is a little bit of a smaller Castle, but it is spacious and perfect for quality time with a group of your favorite people. The living-kitchen area is first-class, the kitchen includes; a stove, oven, dishwasher, and a large fridge with a freezer compartment. 6 people fit comfortably together in the West wing, however it can also be combined with the East Wing which will give you a combined space for up to 11 guests.
The Kitchen is adjoined to the cozy living room that also has a TV. Even Though the interior respects the historic atmosphere of the castle, it combines new with old by providing modern furniture to keep your stay comfortable.
Rooms and what’s included:
In the West Wing there are 2 bedrooms, 1 has a single bed and the other 2 rooms both have Queen sized beds. These rooms include: Bathtub, Hair dryer, Towels, bed sheets, soap, toilet paper, Hangers, bed linens, extra pillow and blankets, iron, TV with cable, crib, Children’s books and toys, high chair, outlet covers, heating, WiFi, free parking, long term stay is allowed, for 28 days or more.
Food and Entertainment:
As this West Wing includes a kitchen, no food is provided on location. This provides an opportunity for cozy nights in and the convenience to make your preferred meals. There is also no entertainment provided, as it is creating a home away from home feel.
3. Hardenberg Burg Hotel
I would love to stay here! It is luxurious and combines nature, culture and relaxation (all of my favourites!). It is not a traditional looking castle, more like a very big luxurious German house. However, it is situated close to the ruins of Hardenburg Castle, providing guests with a fascinating glimpse into the region’s medieval past.
Location:
The hotel is situated in Hardenberg. The closest airport is Kassel-Calden Airport which is 75 km away, which is roughly 1 hour and 17 minutes. It is also simple to get to by car. The town of Hardenberg is a beautiful town. It has many restaurants to choose from and stunning scenic walks. There is the ruins of Hardenberg Castle, which is a must-see and only a stone’s throw away from the Burg Hotel.
Castle Experience:
The Hotel itself is not a castle, but I wanted to add this to the list because the Hardenberg Castle ruins are part of the experience of staying at the Burg Hotel, as it is so close and adds to the atmosphere of the stay. Visiting the Castle is like going on a journey through time. You can walk around the 1000+ year old Castle with stunning views over Norten-Hardenberg and the Leine Valley.
Rooms and what’s included:
These bedrooms are beautiful. They are some of the best I have seen in regards to luxury, simplicity and space. There are 42 rooms in this hotel! They are all gorgeous and include: a double bed, spacious suite with a large sitting area, Terrace or Balcony, view over the horse riding arena or the castle ruin, large en-suite bathroom with shower and bathtub, double vanities, bathrobes and slippers, hair dryer, WiFi, TV, Coffee and Tea facilities and lastly you can bring your dog to stay with you in most of the rooms!
Food/ Entertainment:
There is a luxury Restaurant on site and many options in town to eat. The Restaurant is fine dining but it is a cultural experience that is highly recommended. There are also other activities that the hotel and town provide such as, spas and a fitness center, golf resort, distillery and perfect trails for Biking.
