8 Fairytale Castles in Germany that you can actually stay in

by Alison

Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria Germany inspired Disney castle

Isn’t there something magical about Castles? I just love them. So now that I am living in Germany, people have been asking if I have seen any Castles and if I am going to go and stay in any. It’s crazy that I am now being asked that question! My life is a dream. I looked up Castles in Germany that you can actually stay in. There are many more that you can visit and tour. Nevertheless, if you can actually stay a night or two in a Castle I think it would be a dream!

Growing up in Australia, we have buildings people call “castles”… but then you come to Europe and realize these castles are on a completely different level. Huge stone walls, towers, mountain views, hidden gardens, dramatic staircases, centuries of history… it honestly feels like stepping into a fairytale.

Ever since moving here, I’ve become slightly obsessed with researching castle stays in Germany because if you can sleep in a castle at least once in your life… shouldn’t you?!

There are so many castles in Germany you can visit and tour during the day, but finding the ones you can actually stay overnight in is where things get really exciting.

I researched some of the highest-rated castle hotels in Germany and chose the ones I personally added to my bucket list. I picked them based on:

  • the overall atmosphere and beauty
  • how much of the actual castle you get to experience
  • location and nearby things to do
  • food and amenities
  • whether it genuinely feels magical and memorable

So if you’re planning a Germany trip and want a fairytale experience, here are 8 beautiful castle hotels in Germany that you can actually stay in.

***This post might contain affiliate links, but it won’t cost you anything extra. I only recommend products that I know and love.***

6 Castles in Germany that you can actually stay in:

1. Burghotel auf Schönburg

Luxury castle hotel overlooking the Rhine River in Oberwesel Germany

This castle looks LEGIT.

Like… this is the castle people picture when they imagine medieval Germany.

Perched high above the Rhine River in the gorgeous town of Oberwesel, this castle hotel honestly looks like something out of a fantasy movie. Turrets, stone walls, gardens overlooking the river, antique furniture, candlelit dining… it’s unreal.

Why This Castle Stay Is So Special

The entire atmosphere here feels deeply romantic and historic. You don’t just stay in a modern hotel near a castle — you actually feel immersed in it.

Many of the rooms have balconies overlooking the Rhine River and vineyards below, and the castle gardens are absolutely stunning.

Breakfast is included and honestly… imagine waking up and having breakfast in a real castle dining hall overlooking Germany’s Rhine Valley 😭

Location

Oberwesel is located in the Middle Rhine Valley between Frankfurt and Bonn and is one of the prettiest little towns in the region. Think:

  • wine country
  • half-timbered houses
  • river cruises
  • vineyards
  • medieval streets

It’s incredibly scenic and easy to access by car or train.

Rooms & What’s Included:

Bedroom in Burghotel auf Schönburg
Bedroom

The rooms here honestly look like something out of a fairytale movie. Every room is individually decorated, which makes the whole experience feel so much more special and authentic instead of just another luxury hotel. Some rooms have four-poster beds, antique furniture, cozy sitting areas, and balconies overlooking the Rhine River. Even the “standard” rooms feel elegant and romantic.

Most rooms include:

  • Queen or King beds
  • Beautiful private bathrooms
  • WiFi
  • Seating area
  • River or garden views
  • Complimentary minibar in select suites
  • Terrace or balcony in certain rooms
  • Luxury toiletries and bathrobes in upgraded rooms

And the views? Unreal. Imagine waking up, opening your curtains, and seeing vineyards, the river, and medieval rooftops below you.

Food & Entertainment

One of the biggest highlights here is definitely the breakfast. Guests eat inside the castle dining hall, and it genuinely feels like stepping into another era. They also have a beautiful terrace restaurant overlooking the Rhine River, which is probably one of the most romantic dinner settings imaginable.

You can also:

  • Explore the castle gardens
  • Visit the small castle museum
  • Take Rhine River cruises nearby
  • Visit local wineries and vineyards
  • Walk through the medieval town of Oberwesel

This is the kind of castle hotel where you could honestly spend an entire weekend just relaxing and soaking up the atmosphere.

You can have a look at prices and availability here.

2. East Wing in the winery and Castle F. V. Landenberg

Historic castle stay in the Moselle Valley Germany with vineyard views

This one is such a hidden gem.

Instead of staying in a standard hotel room, you actually rent an entire wing of the castle, which feels incredibly cozy and unique.

The Vibe

If you love:

  • slow mornings
  • wineries
  • countryside views
  • old-world Europe
  • peaceful cozy evenings

…you would LOVE this place.

The castle beautifully mixes historic architecture with modern comfort, so it still feels luxurious and relaxing while keeping the medieval atmosphere intact.

Why People Love It

The town of Ediger-Eller is quiet, charming, and surrounded by vineyards in the Moselle Valley. It’s the kind of place where you wander slowly, drink local wine, and completely disconnect from stress.

It feels much more intimate and peaceful than some of the larger castle hotels.

Rooms and what’s included:

Bedroom in Castle F.V. Landenberg
Bedroom

What makes this stay unique is that you’re essentially renting your own section of a real castle. It feels much more private and cozy than a traditional hotel stay. The interiors combine historic charm with modern comfort, so you still get the magical castle feeling without sacrificing convenience.

The West Wing includes:

  • 2–3 bedrooms
  • Queen beds
  • Fully equipped kitchen
  • Cozy living room
  • WiFi
  • Bathtub
  • Towels and linens
  • Family-friendly amenities
  • TV and heating
  • Free parking

It honestly feels like the type of place you’d stay with your closest friends or family for a slow, cozy weekend in wine country.

Food & Entertainment

Because this castle functions more like a luxury apartment rental, meals aren’t included — but honestly, that’s part of the charm. You can cook cozy dinners together, enjoy local wine, and fully settle into castle life for a few days.

Nearby activities include:

  • Wine tastings
  • Vineyard tours
  • Exploring the Moselle Valley
  • Scenic countryside walks
  • Historic churches and villages

This one feels less touristy and more like living inside a European dream for a weekend.

You can checkout availability and prices here.

3. Relais & Châteaux Hardenberg BurgHotel

Luxury countryside castle hotel near Hardenberg Castle ruins

Okay technically this one isn’t inside the castle itself… but it’s located right beside the ruins of Hardenberg Castle and the entire atmosphere is stunning.

And honestly? The luxury here is incredible.

Why I Added It To This List

This hotel combines:

  • luxury
  • nature
  • history
  • wellness
  • peaceful countryside energy

Which honestly sounds perfect to me 😭

The rooms are BEAUTIFUL. Very elegant, spacious, calming, and luxurious without feeling overly formal.

Rooms and what’s included:

Bedroom in Relais & Châteaux Hardenberg BurgHotel

  • Castle ruin or countryside views
  • Luxury bathrooms with tubs
  • Coffee and tea station

4. Schlosshotel Kronberg

Historic luxury castle hotel near Frankfurt Germany

This place is basically old-money European luxury in castle form.

Originally commissioned by Empress Victoria Friedrich and completed in 1893, this castle is one of the most elegant and luxurious castle hotels in Germany.

What Makes It So Unique

The interiors are stunning:

  • chandeliers
  • libraries

Romantic castle hotel on Rügen Island Germany

This one feels very different from the others because it’s located on Germany’s Baltic Sea island, Rügen.

So instead of dramatic mountain castles, you get:

  • coastal castle vibes
  • sea air
  • beaches
  • white cliffs
  • peaceful nature

The Atmosphere

This castle feels romantic and peaceful rather than dramatic and medieval.

The interiors are elegant and cozy, and there’s also:

  • a spa
  • wellness area
  • indoor pool
  • gardens
  • lagoon views

The whole area of Rügen is honestly stunning and feels very underrated compared to Bavaria.

Rooms and what’s included:

Elegant castle hotel room at Schlosshotel Ralswiek

Beautiful fairytale castle hotel in the Moselle Valley Germany

This castle genuinely looks like a fairytale.

Located in the Moselle Valley wine region, Schloss Lieser is one of the most visually stunning castle hotels I’ve seen.

Why It Stands Out

The architecture is breathtaking with:

  • stained glass
  • ornate woodwork

7. Burg Colmberg

Castles in Germany that you can actually stay in

If you want a REAL medieval castle experience, this is the one.

Burg Colmberg is over 1,000 years old and sits high above the Bavarian countryside with incredible panoramic views.

Why People Love Staying Here

Unlike some castle hotels that feel more like luxury resorts, this one still feels deeply historic and authentic.

You get:

  • stone walls
  • antique furniture
  • castle towers
  • cozy candlelit dining
  • medieval atmosphere

But it’s also surprisingly affordable compared to many luxury castle hotels in Germany.

It honestly feels like stepping straight into another century.

Rooms & What’s Included:

Bedroom inside Burg Colmberg Castle

This is one of the most authentic medieval castle stays in Germany. Burg Colmberg dates back over 1,000 years and still has so many original features, which makes the experience feel incredibly special.

Rooms are cozy and historic with:

  • Antique furniture
  • Four-poster beds in some suites
  • Castle courtyard or countryside views
  • Traditional Bavarian decor
  • WiFi
  • Private bathrooms
  • Family rooms and suites available

It feels much more “medieval castle” than luxury hotel — in the best way.

Food & Entertainment

The castle restaurant is one of the biggest attractions here. Guests can eat traditional Franconian cuisine inside old stone dining halls overlooking the countryside.

You can also:

  • Explore the castle grounds
  • Visit nearby Bavarian villages
  • Go hiking or cycling
  • Visit Rothenburg ob der Tauber nearby (a MUST-see medieval town)

This one feels incredibly cozy during autumn and winter.

It’s the kind of place where you:

  • slow down
  • read books
  • go to the spa
  • sit by fireplaces
  • drink coffee overlooking the mountains

Honestly? A dream.

Rooms & What’s Included:

Luxury Bedroom in Schloss Elmau

Bonus: Where To Stay To Visit Neuschwanstein Castle

8 Fairytale Castle Hotels in Germany You Can Actually Stay In

Okay… we HAVE to talk about Neuschwanstein Castle.

This is probably the most famous castle in Germany — and honestly maybe one of the most famous castles in the world.

It’s the fairytale-looking castle built by King Ludwig II in Bavaria and it literally inspired Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

YES. The Disney castle 😭

Why It Feels So Magical

Neuschwanstein sits high in the Bavarian Alps surrounded by:

  • forests
  • lakes
  • mountains
  • tiny villages
  • horse carriages
  • alpine scenery

It genuinely looks unreal in person.

Can You Stay Inside Neuschwanstein Castle?

No — you can’t stay overnight inside the actual castle.

BUT…

You can stay in beautiful nearby hotels and castle-style accommodations in Schwangau and Füssen with views of the castle.

Some great nearby areas to stay:

  • Schwangau

Tips Before Booking A Castle Hotel In Germany

A few things I learned while researching these:

1. Castle Hotels Vary A LOT

Some are:

  • ultra luxurious
  • modernized
  • spa-focused

While others are:

  • deeply historic
  • more rustic
  • very medieval feeling

So definitely check photos carefully depending on the experience you want.

2. Some Castles Don’t Have Air Conditioning

This is actually very common in Europe, especially in historic buildings.

3. Book Early

Especially during:

  • Christmas market season
  • summer
  • autumn
  • school holidays

The best castle hotels book up FAST.

4. Renting A Car Helps A Lot

Many castle hotels are located in countryside regions or small towns, so having a car makes exploring much easier.

I recommend:

–National Car Rental

–Avis Car Rental

Final Thoughts

I honestly still can’t believe I live in a country where staying in a castle for the weekend is a real possibility 😭

Germany is full of history, beauty, and places that genuinely feel magical. And while visiting castles during the day is amazing… there’s something extra special about actually waking up inside one.

If you’ve ever dreamed about feeling like you stepped into a fairytale, I genuinely think staying in a castle hotel in Germany should be on your bucket list at least once in your life.

And if you’ve stayed in any castle hotels in Germany already, please tell me because I am absolutely adding more to my list.

8 years ago I moved abroad to the US from Australi 8 years ago I moved abroad to the US from Australia.
And 2 months ago my husband, dog and I moved to Germany. 🇩🇪

So what’s next for us? ✨

-I am learning German, it’s hard so feel free to encourage me lol

-I won’t be able to work for a while so I’m LIVING IT UP (mostly with pastries)

-Aldrin has some interviews coming up for work (he is German so he can start working straight away)

-We are living with friends, in their built out attic and it has been the best way to start in a foreign country - instant community, pizza nights, bbq’s etc..

-We are loving being a part of a smaller Church, feels already like family

-In a few months we will start looking for our own place, which will make it feel real that this Country is home

-Attainable travel in Europe is a dream come true and I’ll be sharing it all!

-We feel so privileged and blessed to be living in our 3rd Country together 🇦🇺🇺🇸🇩🇪

-Big life transitions are hard (miss family and friends everyday) but thankfulness has been the key for us

-Lastly, Aldrins cousin made us a cake to welcome us here to Germany from Australia and then the US🥹 what is my life?!

THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO THE THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO THE USA 🇺🇸 FROM AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺
⬇️
-Marrying a permanent resident is NOT the same as marrying a US Citizen. It took me 2 years to be allowed back into the US. Marrying a citizen is much faster, knowing that in advance would have been helpful lol 😑

-Every state in the US is almost like a different Country, they have their own culture and laws, unlike Australia where they are much more similar

-Public transport is so different in the US (unless you live in a major City.) So many people I know there have never been on a train before 🤯

-Not having free medical insurance is just like in the movies, it’s hard to plan financially and save, I’ll forever be grateful for Australia’s medical system

-The work/life balance is probably my least favourite things about living in the US. US employees are actually not always legally entitled to paid holidays, but on average employees do provide on average around 5-10 paid vacation days a year.

-Thanksgiving is the best! We love it and want to incorporate it into our traditions 🦃

-Writing dates backwards I am used to now, but it took forever! My birthday is 28/7 but in the US it is 7/28…

-Americans are sO good at championing each other and celebrating peoples success, it’s such a beautiful part of their culture! 🙌🏼

-Squirels look just like they do in the cartoons 🐿️

-Lastly, don’t ask for a side of ‘chips’ with your burger, you will be disappointed 😆
