I used to think meditation just… wasn’t for me.
It felt very “out there,” very disconnected from how I understood my faith.
And if I’m honest, I think a lot of us quietly feel that way.
But the more I’ve grown in my walk with God, the more I’ve realised something really important:
We’re actually called to meditate… just not in the way the world does it.
So… What Is Christian Meditation?
Let’s clear this up first, because this is where people get confused.
The world will tell you:
“Empty your mind.”
“Detach from your thoughts.”
“Just be still and think about nothing.”
But the Bible never tells us to empty our minds.
It tells us to fill them.
📖 “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night…” — Joshua 1:8
📖 “Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.” — Psalm 1:2
Biblical meditation looks like this:
– Thinking deeply about God’s Word
– Repeating it
– Letting it actually sink into your heart
– Allowing it to change how you think
It’s not passive. It’s not empty.
It’s intentional.
Why This Actually Matters (More Than You Think)
Here’s something that really shifted things for me:
📖 “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” — Romans 10:17
If faith comes from hearing the Word… then what do you think happens when you sit with it, repeat it, and meditate on it?
Your faith grows.
Not randomly. Not magically.
But intentionally.
Most people want stronger faith, but they’re not actually spending time with the thing that produces it.
And I say that with so much love, because I’ve been there too.
Reading a verse quickly in the morning is good…
But meditating on it? Sitting with it? Letting it actually shape you? That’s what makes all the difference.

A Little Perspective Shift (This Changed How I See Rest)
This part honestly made me pause the first time I really thought about it.
God created rest before we were ever tired.
📖 “On the seventh day God rested…” — Genesis 2:2
That was before sin. Before stress. Before burnout.
So rest isn’t just something we need because life is busy…
It’s something God designed as part of a healthy, whole life.
Which means slowing down, breathing, being still with Him — that might feel like you’re doing nothing, but that’s actually obedience.
Let’s Talk About Breathing (Because This Is Actually Powerful)
This might sound simple, but stay with me.
Your body and your spirit are more connected than you think.
When you’re anxious → your breathing is fast and shallow
When you’re calm → your breathing is slow and steady
So when you choose to slow your breathing, you’re actually telling your body:
“You’re safe. You can relax.”
And that’s when it becomes easier to focus on God.
📖 “Be still, and know that I am God.” — Psalm 46:10
Stillness isn’t just a mindset… it’s something you can step into physically, and it impacts your whole body.
How to Actually Do This (Simply)
Nothing complicated. No pressure. Just something you can actually do.
1. Sit Somewhere Quiet
Doesn’t need to be aesthetic or perfect. Just somewhere you can pause.
2. Slow Your Breathing
Inhale for 4
Hold for 2
Exhale for 6
Do that a few times.
Even just 2–3 minutes makes a difference.
3. Choose ONE Verse (This Is Key)
Not five. Not ten. Just one.
And instead of reading it once and moving on… stay with it.
Here are some you can choose from that are so powerful to meditate on:
📖 Isaiah 26:3 — “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on You.”
👉 Sit with that. What does “perfect peace” actually mean for you right now?
📖 Psalm 23:1 — “The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.”
👉 If that’s true… what are you worrying about?
📖 Philippians 4:6–7 — “Do not be anxious about anything…”
👉 Not some things. Not most things. Anything.
📖 2 Timothy 1:7 — “God has not given us a spirit of fear…”
👉 So if fear is present… where is it coming from?
📖 Matthew 6:26 — “Look at the birds… your Heavenly Father feeds them.”
👉 You matter more than birds. Let that land.
📖 Psalm 119:15 — “I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways.”
👉 This is literally a model for what we’re doing.
📖 Colossians 3:2 — “Set your minds on things above…”
👉 This is a choice. Not a feeling.
📖 Hebrews 4:9–11 — talks about entering God’s rest
👉 Rest isn’t just physical — it’s spiritual.
4. Repeat It (This Is Where It Gets Powerful)
Say it quietly. Think it slowly.
Let it actually go from your head → into your heart.
This is meditation.

5. Sit With God (Don’t Rush This)
No pressure to “feel something.”
Just be aware that God is here and God is near. This part takes faith. Just believe God is close, because He says He is.
📖 “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.” — James 4:8
Something Most People Don’t Realise…
You are always meditating on something.
Worry is meditation.
Overthinking is meditation.
Fear is meditation.
You’re just repeating negative thoughts instead of truth.
So this isn’t about learning something completely new…
It’s about redirecting what you’re already doing.
Soft, Cozy Tools That Help (But Aren’t Required)
Just to say this first — you don’t need anything to do this.
This is about your relationship with God, not stuff.
But… creating a space you actually enjoy coming back to? That helps a lot.
Here are a few things I personally love:
- A beautiful Bible that you actually want to open
- A devotional for days when you don’t know where to start
- A journal to write down what God is showing you
- A candle (this just makes everything feel calmer, I won’t lie)
- Noise-cancelling headphones or soft worship music
- A cozy blanket
- A simple set of scripture cards you can rotate through
It’s not about making it perfect…
It’s about making it inviting.
Final Thoughts
If you take anything from this, let it be this:
You don’t need to chase peace.
You need to sit with the One who gives it.
And sometimes that looks a lot less like striving… and a lot more like slowing down, breathing, and staying with one simple truth.
Your faith will grow.
Your mind will quiet down.
And you’ll start to notice God’s presence in a deeper, more real way.
Not because you did something complicated…
but because you chose to be with Him.
