6 Books that changed my view on Emotional Wellness

by Alison

I looooove reading! It’s so much more relaxing than watching TV for me. I can go at my own pace. I often feel so connected to the author, and I find I am able to absorb the information so much more. Whether the book is a fun novel, or an intellectual book, I love using my own imagination. Picturing what the author is talking about in a way that works well for my brain! So I have 6 books that changed my view on Emotional Wellness that I want to share with you!

***This post may contain affiliate links, but only to products I genuinely love. It won’t cost you anything extra. You can read the full disclosure here.***

I read anywhere and everywhere, (except in the car, I get so car sick!) I read before bed, first thing in the morning, in a bath with my waterproof kindle and a glass of wine or favorite tea…when we go camping, it’s just so interesting and relaxing to me!

And there is SO MUCH TO LEARN!

I have to add here that having an actual paper page book is still my preference. I love the smell of books. Knowing how far I’ve still got to go, and how a new book feels in my hands…it may sound weird. BUT I think some of you can relate.

The reason I bring this up is because I never thought I would get a Kindle. But oh my gosh Aldrin bought me this one for my birthday and it’s literally amazing! It’s waterproof, so I can read it anywhere, it’s light weight and fits soooo many books it’s insane! I actually read even more now that I have this kindle. The books to purchase are almost half the price as paper books.

I also recently subscribed to kindle Unlimited. It’s sort of like a library. I pay $10 a month. There are sooo many books that I can download for free (well you know, the cost of the subscription lol).

I think it’s great because I don’t often read a book more than once. If it’s absolutely phenomenal I can then choose carefully which books I actually would like to purchase to keep forever.

The 6 Books that changed my view of Emotional Wellness

I have *many* books I have read that I love. However, I wanted to specifically share 6 books that have REALLY changed my perspective. They’ve shifted my mindset and understanding of healthy Emotional Wellness for Christians.

I love talking about emotional wellness because I believe for Christians it has to look different than it does for everyone else. We should be the most healthy emotional beings walking this earth! However, that doesn’t mean we don’t have emotions (it would be sooo boring if we didn’t have emotions!) or need to work on them. It means that we get healing and revelation of our emotional wellness and health through the Holy Spirit; that’s the difference!

When we do it with Him the outcome has to be life changing and transforming. If it’s not then we aren’t living in the wholeness that Jesus told us was available through his death…

So without further ado, here are the 6 books that changed my view of Emotional Wellness:

1. Victorious Emotions by Wendy Backlund

Victorious Emotions was absolutely pivotal to me in understanding how we can make our emotions work for us, rather than against us.

It totally shifted my personal responsibility, away from being a victim to my emotions, to actually realizing that I cannot let my emotions rule me. I now have so many tools to help me use my emotions well, how they were designed to be used!

There’s a lot of personal breakthrough, revelational insights and growth opportunities in this book. The option to grow into an emotionally mature person is available. As long as you activate what you read, and not just ‘read’ it.

A great quote from this book: “I began to understand that God did not want me to suppress my emotions. He wanted me to change them by identifying the beliefs that produce them.”

You can find this book at:

Amazon: Victorious Emotions

Book Depository: Victorious Emotions

2. Battlefield of the Mind by Joyce Meyer

I had heard of this book sooo many times! I thought it would just be a regular Christian self help book…

However, I realised that even though it’s very simple, it’s also so biblical and practical. If you need biblical and practical encouragement to win the battle of your mind then this book is for you!

Meyer is known for her simple yet profound answers to the struggles that many Christians have. If you need to start somewhere I highly recommend this book. She is straight forward, no nonsense, and she will help pull you up to a place of confidence in who you are in God.

A great quote from this book: “You cannot have a positive life and a negative mind.”

Amazon: Battlefield of the Mind

Book Depository: Battlefield of the Mind

3. Waking the Dead by John Eldredge

THIS BOOK. Wow. It was as if this book was made to wake up my SOUL…just as the title says, it will wake you up!!!

I have read a few of Eldredge’s books, and they all have something unique to give. However, this one particularly stood out to me because it was as if every chapter met me right where I was at.

He’s so good at bringing profound ideas to the table. He explains it in such a simple way that you keep thinking and meditating on it all day, until you realize how profound the ideas actually are!

He has a special way of writing and getting insight from God on emotions and revelations that will make you stronger, more childlike and purer in heart. It’s hard to explain, but I think he has a gift of translating heavenly principles in a language that we can understand and actually put into practice. He’s also very open about his own failures and how he learnt from his own mistakes.

The Father heart he has stands out and you will feel safe and protected (as some parts will challenge you). But you will also feel equipped and ready to fight for a healthy emotional wellness and grounding.

A great quote from his book: “somehow we have overlooked the fact that this treasure called the heart can also be broken, has been broken, and now lies in pieces down under the surface. When it comes to habits we cannot quit or patterns we cannot stop, anger that flies out of nowhere, fears we cannot overcome, or weaknesses we hate to admit–much of what troubles us comes from the broken places in our hearts crying out for relief. Jesus speaks as if we are all brokenhearted. We would do well to trust His perspective on this.”

You can find this book at:

Amazon: Waking the Dead

Book Depository: Waking the Dead

4. Moral Revolution by Kris and Jason Vallotton

There aren’t that many good books on purity…but this one is *actually* good. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to know why sexual purity is worth pursuing, why it’s not ‘old fashioned’ but is actually needed now more than ever!

This book will give you some ‘aha’ moments that will put things into perspective for you.

The reason I have added this book to a list of emotional wellness books is because sexual purity has more to do with our mind, beliefs and emotions than it does with our physical body. There’s sooo much more to it then just sex. So if you want true emotional wellness than you can’t escape learning about how it effects you on a sexual level too.

Kris and Jason talk real, raw and answer many questions that people didn’t even know they had. Buy it, read it and then give it away, everyone needs to read this book!

A great quote from this book: “Anything that masters you is an addiction, and it will eventually destroy you. Addictions grow in the basement of denial. Denial means that you avoid the root issues that cause pain in your heart by covering them up with pleasure. That is why sexual addiction is so rampant in this world.”

You can find this book at:

Amazon: Moral Revolution

Book Depository: Moral Revolution

5. You’re Crazy if you don’t talk to Yourself by Steve Backlund

This book is Amazing!! Backlund has a way of introducing a concept that many haven’t really delved into fully and that is the power of talking to ourselves!

He makes it sooo relatable, easy to read and it’s actually a very small book. However, it is a very powerful one!

The concept of this book is simple; if Jesus spoke the Truth to invisible beings and mindsets that sought to restrict and defeat Him, then so should we!

We need to speak the Truth over our souls in order to set the course for our lives. Our words really are that powerful! They will change your emotions, beliefs and way of living!

A great quote from this book: “What we believe is the determining factor of whether our lives move forward or backward. We can have a ‘super-Christian’ pray for us, but ultimately our own beliefs are the key to spiritual advancement.”

You can find this book at:

Amazon: You’re Crazy if you don’t talk to yourself

Book Depository: You’re Crazy if you don’t talk to yourself

6. The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron

OK this book is a bit different but I feel like I came to a better understanding of myself through this book and it is a little more of a ‘self-help’ book in the sense that you do the work! BUT that’s also what I loved about it!

She gives you the prompts, the tools to discover your *creative* self. And before you shut off here, she believes that if we were made in the image of a creative God we are ALL creative in some way. (Looove this!)

She believes that we lose our creativity as we get older because of beliefs and lies we start believing. She helps take you on a journey to find out what lies you’re believing and to get back to that creative inner child who is still there, begging to be set free!

This is a work book style and if you trust the journey I guarantee that you will see a part of you come alive again! It is actually a truly beautiful process and you will gain such insight about who you are, what power your emotions have over you and how to get your creativity back!

A great quote from this book: “We are not accustomed to thinking that God’s will for us and our own dreams can coincide.”

You can find this book at:

Amazon: The Artist’s Way

Book Depository: The Artist’s Way

In Conclusion…

I really value the understanding and revelation from people who have gone on Emotional Wellness journeys and have learnt so much. I can’t imagine what my life would look like with out the helpful input from these phonominal authors. They have some absolute gems to share with us and I highly recommend ANY of these books. I promise you they all have something to bring to the table that will change your life in this area!

AMSTERDAM 🌷🇳🇱 What an experience! It was AMSTERDAM 🌷🇳🇱
What an experience! It was so beautiful and interesting. Filled with so much history, breathtaking architecture and weeds and nudity…

What a combination.

My family roots are 100% Dutch. It’s my grandparents home from both sides. It’s special to me and I loved being there. But the spiritual darkness that is there is real.

Who else has been and what was your experience?

8 years ago I moved abroad to the US from Australi 8 years ago I moved abroad to the US from Australia.
And 2 months ago my husband, dog and I moved to Germany. 🇩🇪

So what’s next for us? ✨

-I am learning German, it’s hard so feel free to encourage me lol

-I won’t be able to work for a while so I’m LIVING IT UP (mostly with pastries)

-Aldrin has some interviews coming up for work (he is German so he can start working straight away)

-We are living with friends, in their built out attic and it has been the best way to start in a foreign country - instant community, pizza nights, bbq’s etc..

-We are loving being a part of a smaller Church, feels already like family

-In a few months we will start looking for our own place, which will make it feel real that this Country is home

-Attainable travel in Europe is a dream come true and I’ll be sharing it all!

-We feel so privileged and blessed to be living in our 3rd Country together 🇦🇺🇺🇸🇩🇪

-Big life transitions are hard (miss family and friends everyday) but thankfulness has been the key for us

-Lastly, Aldrins cousin made us a cake to welcome us here to Germany from Australia and then the US🥹 what is my life?!

It’s not entirely true but it’s still funny 😂

THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO TH THINGS I WISH I’D KNOWN BEFORE IMMIGRATING TO THE USA 🇺🇸 FROM AUSTRALIA 🇦🇺
⬇️
-Marrying a permanent resident is NOT the same as marrying a US Citizen. It took me 2 years to be allowed back into the US. Marrying a citizen is much faster, knowing that in advance would have been helpful lol 😑

-Every state in the US is almost like a different Country, they have their own culture and laws, unlike Australia where they are much more similar

-Public transport is so different in the US (unless you live in a major City.) So many people I know there have never been on a train before 🤯

-Not having free medical insurance is just like in the movies, it’s hard to plan financially and save, I’ll forever be grateful for Australia’s medical system

-The work/life balance is probably my least favourite things about living in the US. US employees are actually not always legally entitled to paid holidays, but on average employees do provide on average around 5-10 paid vacation days a year.

-Thanksgiving is the best! We love it and want to incorporate it into our traditions 🦃

-Writing dates backwards I am used to now, but it took forever! My birthday is 28/7 but in the US it is 7/28…

-Americans are sO good at championing each other and celebrating peoples success, it’s such a beautiful part of their culture! 🙌🏼

-Squirels look just like they do in the cartoons 🐿️

-Lastly, don’t ask for a side of ‘chips’ with your burger, you will be disappointed 😆
